The Miami Dolphins host the Baltimore Ravens to kick off Week 9 NFL action on "Thursday Night Football."
Part of the pregame programming for the Ravens-Dolphins tilt included former Dolphins teammates Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tua Tagovailoa going for a drive together through Miami. Fitzpatrick, now an analyst for Prime Video, talked through how the 2025 season's been for Tagovailoa and the 2-6 Dolphins.
But viewers caught something during the video segment: Tagovailoa's left eye. The Dolphins' starting quarterback woke up with that eye swollen shut ahead of Week 8 against the Atlanta Falcons and it appears to still be affected.
When asked about what happened, Tagovailoa said he didn't have any specific answers.
"Woke up that way," he said. "[I] kind of had some thoughts of what it could be, what it might be, but none of those seemed to be what it was, whether it was a stye or whether it was maybe allergic to something, an allergic reaction."
He was added to the injury report with an undisclosed illness ahead of Week 8.
He played the game against the Falcons with a clear visor for the first time since his high school career. It paid off as Tagovailoa had his best game of the season in completing 20 of 26 passes for 205 yards and four touchdowns.
Amazon Prime sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung added that Tagovailoa said he can see much better on Thursday night, and that the visor will stay for "swag" reasons.
“Yeah, I think the guys like the visor, so I’ll stick with the visor," Tagovailoa said Monday ahead of the game.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel made light of the situation.
"I guess it was an eye issue, I’d call it, what does that mean? He has a built in Halloween costume for sure," McDaniel said. "Outside of that, it’s not really on my radar. There’s medicines delivered by people that are responsible for that and I’m assuming he’ll have either no visor on or a visor on. He’ll throw with his left hand, I know that much."
Miami will be looking for a similarly strong performance by their starting quarterback to hold off a Ravens team seeing quarterback Lamar Jackson return to the lineup. A loss for the Dolphins would drop them to 2-7, one game ahead of the New York Jets in the win column at the bottom of the AFC East.
