BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is asking Birmingham’s city council to set aside $1 million from the city’s reserve fund to support families at risk of losing their SNAP benefits in November due to the ongoing federal government shutdown .

“We have a moral obligation to take care of the residents within our city,” Woodfin said at a news conference Thursday morning. “Food and nutrition is a necessity, it is not a choice.”

Woodfin said the funds will be managed by United Way of Central Alabama to provide supplemental nutrition assistance through the month of November.

The city of Birmingham has also set up a website that connects residents to services and assistance programs offered by organizations who are assisting in the city’s efforts.
