Mandurah’s iconic castle is about to receive a new life as the centrepiece in a childcare centre playground.
The repairs to the castle began in earnest this month, with developers from Jinton starting on the roof and making repairs to the structural integrity of the castle.
The castle’s architect, George Kaspar, was born in Bavaria in 1931 and visited all of its medieval castles, hoping to build his own one day.
In the 60s, Kaspar moved to Melbourne from Germany and built his first castle in the front yard of his home.
He built other castles at homes in NSW, Queensland and finally Kalgoorlie.
In 1977, Kalgoorlie Shire approached him to build a castle at Hammond Park, which still stands.
