An extraordinary administrative error has triggered a state-wide investigation after hundreds of Queensland students discovered that they had studied the wrong ancient history topic for an entire year.

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) had issued instructions to schools in August 2023, confirming that Year 12 students were to study Julius Caesar, not his successor, Augustus.

The authority then followed up with another reminder in April 2024, reiterating the change and noting that students in 2026 would be able to choose between Julius Caesar or Cleopatra.

Despite the two notifications, nine schools failed to make the switch, with 140 students preparing all year for the wrong subject with them receiving the notice just one day before their exams.
