KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Carol McPhal was awakened from a nap Thursday afternoon on the first floor of the River Grove Retirement Community in Belmont.

It was an armed officer at the door telling her to stay in her apartment after a suspect forced his way into the apartment building, barricading himself in another woman's apartment.

“You watch it on TV, but you don't imagine it's ever going to happen right in your own backyard, which it did,” McPhal said.

The woman's neighbor was happy to learn that she was safe.

“I saw that she was okay, reclining on a stretcher downstairs, and she didn't leave by ambulance,” said neighbor Shane Jensen.

Deputies say the man, armed with a knife, broke a window to get into the building, receiving minor injuries.
