MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A Memphis police officer hit and killed a pedestrian Thursday night while driving their squad car at the intersection of Park Avenue and Getwell Road.

A Memphis Police Department spokesperson confirms that backup officers were called to the scene near the University of Memphis’ Park Avenue campus at 6:41 p.m.

The victim, whose age and sex have not been identified, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries but did not survive.

MPD says that the Tennessee Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
