DES MOINES, Iowa —

Hundreds of Des Moines students are now ready for winter after a big donation from insurance company Athene. The company donated nearly 2,300 coats and pairs of boots at Garton and Studebaker Elementary Schools in Des Moines.

"I sometimes tear up even talking about it because to be able to help them try on the coats and put on those boots is a joy," said Rona Berinobis, spokesperson for Athene at Thursday's giveaway at Studebaker Elementary School. "Some of them wear them out of here. They go out at recess to put them on."

Athene and Des Moines Public Schools have been working together for more than 30 years to keep students warm in the winter months. The donations will be spread out across six elementary schools in the district.
