Halloween falls on Friday, Oct. 31, this year. Other holidays may see closures or adjusted operating hours for schools, banks, post offices, stores, businesses, and the stock market. But Halloween is not one of those holidays.
While the holiday is widely celebrated across the United States, it is not a federal holiday, meaning it is not a day off for federal employees. However, many federal workers will inadvertently have the day off this year due to the ongoing government shutdown.
In order for a day to become a federal holiday, it must be enacted by law through Congress and signed by the president. Schools, banks, and some private companies typically observe federal holidays as a day off.
The next federal holiday on the calendar to keep an eye out for is Veterans Day, which is on Tuesday, Nov. 11 this year. Multiple banks and the U.S. Postal Service have confirmed to USA TODAY they will be closed on the holiday.
