MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — All schools in Mathews County were briefly placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a sexual assault suspect made his way to the high school.

Deputies took a 39-year-old man into custody at gunpoint in the parking lot of the high school late Thursday afternoon because investigators say the suspect was known to carry a gun.

The sheriff's office said at 3:21 p.m., it said one of its investigators observed the suspect in the Mathews County High School parking lot and he was taken into custody at gunpoint. The sheriff's office said some people associated with the high school may have observed the arrest.

But after the arrest, deputies say they did not find a gun on him.

He was charged aggravated sexual battery and indecent liberties. He is in the Middle Peni
