The Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to nine people accused of assaulting human rights activist Silvester Namiwa during a disrupted demonstration in June.

The suspects, who appeared before Magistrate Benjamin Chulu on Wednesday, pleaded not guilty to six charges, including arson, grievous harm, and robbery. The alleged offences occurred on June 26 at the Lilongwe Community Grounds, where a peaceful protest turned violent.

In his ruling, Magistrate Chulu said the court found no evidence suggesting the accused were a flight risk. Each has been released on a K500,000 bail bond and is required to provide two sureties.
