LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - University of Michigan Health-Sparrow celebrated All Souls’ Day with a ceremony to honor and commemorate the remains of adults and fetuses that relatives never claimed.

The university health system, the Catholic Diocese of Lansing and Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery held the ceremony Thursday to honor the souls of the deceased and provide a resting place for them.

The tradition began about six years ago through the efforts of a deacon in training, according to the medical examiner’s office.

“Approximately six years ago, a deacon, Deacon Jim Cullum, during his process of becoming a deacon, had a project, and part of it was to help lay to rest unclaimed remains and those that were left abandoned,” said Michelle Fox, chief investigator for the Office of Medical Exami
