Donald Trump called on Senate Republicans to use the so-called nuclear option to destroy the filibuster rule in the Senate in a lengthy post on Truth Social Thursday evening. If they were to eliminate the filibuster, Republicans would only need a simple majority, not 60 votes, to pass anything including the continuing resolution to reopen the government that has been stalled for weeks.
"It is now time for the Republicans to play their 'TRUMP CARD,'" Trump wrote on Truth Social, "and go for what is called the Nuclear Option – Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of, NOW!"
The current filibuster rule requires 60 votes to end debate and allow a majority vote on a bill to move forward. The effect being no piece of legislation, with notable exceptions, can pass the Senate without 60 votes.
