PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The bankrupt owner of Roger Williams Medical Center and Fatima Hospital has filed a court motion to close the two hospitals by Dec. 31 if the state won't take them over, Target 12 has confirmed.

The company, Prospect Medical Holdings, filed the paperwork late Thursday night. It follows months of so far unsuccessful efforts to finalize a deal that would transfer the two hospitals to a new owner, the Centurion Foundation, a Georgia-based nonprofit.

Roger Williams and Fatima operate under the umbrella brand of CharterCARE, whose spokesperson Otis Brown stressed that they continued to operate as normal on Friday.
