NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Police in Newport helped the FBI detain a person who is "suspected of being involved in a violent felony" on Thursday.
Newport police said the FBI reached out and shared a description of the suspect and their vehicle.
Officers located the person and pulled them over on Narragansett Avenue, near Spring Street.
The suspect was detained and handed over to the FBI.
Police said detectives found "unusual items" inside the vehicle and contacted the state fire marshal's office to request the bomb squad's assistance.
The bomb squad determined the vehicle and its contents posed no threat to the public, according to police.
The incident is part of an "ongoing federal investigation," police said, referring all further inquiries to the FBI.
