YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN)- Fears are growing for millions of families who could lose access to federal food assistance starting Saturday, as the government shutdown drags on.

Now, the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is helping with an emergency food drive.

Bishop David Bonnar is calling on parishioners and others to donate non-perishables to help those who are about to lose their monthly food stamps. He says this is a call to serve the poor and vulnerable around us.

Beginning Friday and through the end of the year, items will be collected at parishes with a food pantry. You can also donate to Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul locations.

There are several food assistance resources in Youngstown amid the unavailability of SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown.
