HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - Hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residents will have no money on their SNAP cards as of Saturday, creating concerns that pet owners may struggle to feed their animals as they prioritize human food purchases.
While SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy pet food, animal welfare advocates say the lapse in the food assistance program will still impact cats and dogs across the state.
Shonya Harrison, founder of No Animal Left Unfed, an animal welfare organization that helps families keep their pets healthy and fed, said she has received dozens of calls over the last couple of days from concerned pet owners.
“It’s really overwhelming right now,” Harrison said.
