BRISTOL, Conn. (WFSB) - There’s a rematch in Bristol in the race for mayor, with former mayor Ellen Zappo Sassu wanting to beat Mayor Jeff Caggiano and return to city hall.

Mayor Jeff Caggiano, a Republican, is seeking a third term.

“The main issue to focus on is finish what has been started,” Caggiano said.

He’s talking about land across the street from city hall that sat vacant for almost 20 years. Construction has now started on new apartments, restaurants and businesses.

“Couldn’t be more proud of the work/play environment we have created downtown,” Caggiano said.

But an increase in taxes could be a big issue in this year’s election. This past summer homeowners were stunned when they got their tax bills with a 6 percent increase. Property taxes have gone up 27 percent in four year
