HAMILTON, Ohio (WXIX) - Students at Linden Elementary School are collecting school supplies and donations to send to Jamaica and Haiti after Hurricane Melissa devastated the Caribbean region as one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record.

The hurricane killed dozens and displaced thousands as torrential rains and damaging winds knocked down power lines, destroyed homes and left schools unrecognizable across the region.

Second graders Amira, Olivia and Arianna in Mr. Hardewig’s class initiated the relief effort after learning about the storm’s impact.

“The kids have invested a lot of their own time in learning about these schools and how these people all over the world have come to try and help them and I had some students come up to me and say, ‘Hey, let’s see if we could try to help
