LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) — A lot of kids will be returning home with bags full of candy tonight.

For today’s Good Question: Who makes those black and orange candies that show up around Halloween, and do they have a name?

Those candies do have a name — they’re called peanut butter kisses, and they have a long history connected to another more well-known candy.

Connection to Mary Janes

Food historians say they are an offshoot of Mary Janes.

The website says that candy was first manufactured in 1914 by taking molasses taffy and folding peanut butter into it.

The normal wrapper is yellow and red, but at some point they started manufacturing the thicker round versions in black and orange wrappers.
