An explosion Friday morning at the HF Sinclair Navajo Refinery in Artesia is under control, according to Artesia police.
"The earlier emergency at the HF Sinclair Navajo Refinery has been successfully extinguish by the emergency response teams," the police department wrote in a Facebook post around 1 p.m. "All city and county emergency services have cleared the area."
Surrounding roads are all open and safe for travel, the department wrote, and the refinery is monitoring air quality and safety conditions.
Plumes of thick smoke were emitting from the facility, the department wrote in a Facebook post earlier Friday. The agency initially urged nearby residents to avoid the site and stay indoors if they spot smoke.
The state Environment Department is monitoring the air quality in the area,
