Alberta’s education ministry announced late Friday that the province’s scheduled January provincial exams as well as Grade 9 provincial achievement tests have been cancelled following a more than three-week strike by teachers.
The ministry noted in Friday afternoon’s announcement that students may opt to write the exams later in the academic year, in April or June of 2026, on a voluntary basis.
“Students who choose not to write at a later date will receive their school-awarded mark as their final official course mark,” a news release from the provincial government states.
“A notation will be added to transcripts confirming that no diploma exam was written. This ensures there is no impact on students’ ability to graduate or transition into post-secondary programs.”
