MADISON, Wis. — UW Health encourages lung cancer screenings, as it is the leading cause of cancer death and the second most common cancer in the U.S. excluding skin cancer.

Dr. Cheryl Czerlanis , a medical oncologist and UW Health and a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, says screening is a critical tool for early cancer detection.

“Lung cancer is a serious disease, but more people than ever are surviving lung cancer thanks in part to early detection,” she said. “Diagnosing lung cancer before symptoms appear provides us with more treatment options and typically leads to better outcomes for our patients.”

This type of cancer can spread to other parts of the lung, chest, lymph nodes, brain, liver, adrenal glands, bones, and more.
