MANCHESTER, N.H. —

Heading into the holiday shopping season, timing your purchases might be the key to staying on budget.

A new report finds that consumers expect to drop their holiday gift spending by 11% compared to last year.

Experts with Consumer Reports said there are some strategies that can help you save money this time of year.

"Buying earlier can lock in lower prices and give you the best selection before the most popular items sell out," said Samantha Gordon of Consumer Reports. "But buying early doesn't mean buying more. Sticking to your list helps make sure your budget stays on track."
