ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Friday marks the 75th anniversary of the first NBA game featuring an African American player, celebrated in Rochester.
In 1950, Earl Lloyd made history by playing for the Washington Capitols against the Rochester Royals at Edgerton Park, becoming the first African American to play in an NBA game.
"Everything that comes with pickup basketball is probably the most enjoyable experiences someone can have and for kids, no matter what their economic backgrounds are, race, etc. It's healthy fun competition and I think it's important to realize that might not have been easily accessible if we didn't have opportunities in history to make that possible today," said Eric Rose, City of Rochester Community Athletics Director.
