The Supreme Court of India has ruled that a “mere refusal to marry” does not constitute instigation to commit suicide under the Indian Penal Code. A bench of Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K.V. Viswanathan quashed criminal proceedings for abetment of suicide (Section 306, IPC) against a man, holding that even if the prosecution’s allegations were accepted, the ingredients for the offence were not met.

The court allowed a criminal appeal filed by Yadwinder Singh @Sunny, challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court order dated 17.3.2025, which had dismissed his petition to quash the proceedings.
