CANTON — For the second time in school history, Sequoyah can call itself a region champion.

The Chiefs (9-1, 6-1) took down longtime Cherokee County rival Creekview 31-14 on Friday night to clinch the Region 6AAAAA championship, their first such title since 2003, and first under coach James Teter.

“It means a lot,” Teter said. “It's been 17 years, and we've been runner up three other times, so it just means a lot to these kids. They've worked really hard, not just this year, but the last four years. This senior class, and this group in general, has worked hard this summer to get to this point.”

It continued the season of milestones at Sequoyah, which includes two broken scoring records and Teter crossing the 100-win mark to become the county’s all-time winningest coach.
