Kennedy senior Kenny Tyler returned a fumble roughly 60 yards for a touchdown and senior Daywon Gutierrez kicked the extra point that turned out to be the difference as the Cougars clinched a share of the district title by defeating De La Salle 14-13 on Saturday at Pan American Stadium.
All the scoring for both teams occurred in the second quarter, and the lead-changing play came just before halftime.
On that play, standout defensive end Dominick Ruth quickly reached the De La Salle quarterback and punched the ball loose for Tyler to pick it up and run to the end zone to help Kennedy (6-3, 4-0 District 10-3A) run its winning streak to five games.
Creating turnovers has been a point of emphasis for Kennedy in practices, and the effort by Ruth paid off in that moment.
