A school bus driver died and four children sustained minor injuries in a crash on Highway 401 near London, Ontario, on Sunday morning. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that the incident occurred just after 9:00 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway.
According to OPP Constable Steven Duguay, the bus, which was carrying 42 passengers, left the roadway, tipped over, and came to a stop. "We've got 42 passengers on board that school bus, four of which were transported to the hospital with minor injuries," Duguay stated.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Duguay noted that it is too early in the investigation to determine the cause of the driver's death. The police have not released the driver's name and could not confirm his place of origin, but they confirmed that the driver was male.
Following the crash, the westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed between Veteran's Memorial Parkway and Highbury Avenue for the investigation. Within two hours of the incident, police established a command center at the East Lions Community Centre in southeast London.
Parents were seen reuniting with their children at the center, visibly emotional after the incident. Reports indicate that the bus was en route from the Kitchener-Waterloo area to Point Pelee National Park for a school trip. The OPP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
