North Bay, Ontario – The Ontario Provincial Police are advising parents to thoroughly check their children's Halloween candy after a suspicious substance was discovered in a chip bag. A family living on Chenier Road in the Papineau-Cameron area of Mattawa reported the incident on Saturday. They found a chip bag that seemed to have been cut open and then resealed.

Police conducted a preliminary test on the item, which suggested the presence of suspected morphine. "At this time, there are no additional reports of similar incidents, and the investigation remains ongoing," the North Bay OPP stated in a media release.

Authorities are working to trace the origin of the item and assess any potential public safety risks. As a precautionary measure, the OPP recommends that parents and guardians inspect all Halloween treats for any signs of tampering. This includes looking for tears, holes, or irregularities in candy wrappers, as well as signs of resealing or altered packaging.

If any items appear to be tampered with or suspicious, the OPP advises against consuming them. Instead, individuals should contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers. The police emphasize the importance of vigilance during the Halloween season to ensure the safety of children.
