Indigenous leader Warren Mundine has accused the Allan government of misdirecting the attention of Victorians by imposing a treaty “no one really wanted”.
The treaty bill was passed in the Victorian parliament in late October, just two years after the state rejected the national Voice to Parliament.
Victoria became the first Australian jurisdiction to legislate a treaty with First Peoples, following the introduction of the Statewide Treaty Bill 2025 to parliament.
Premier Jacinta Allan forged ahead with the proposal, which will enshrine a new elected body called Gellung Warl, despite more than 60 per cent of Victorians either opposing it or being undecided, according to a new Institute of Public Affairs survey.
