MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol says an investigation is underway after a fatal hit-and-run in Marshalltown Saturday night.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 30-year-old Melanie Katherine Nelson, of Marshalltown, was crossing South 3rd Avenue, just south of East Main Street, when she was struck by a vehicle around 10:05 p.m.

Nelson was transported to UnityPoint Hospital by Marshalltown Fire, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Authorities say the vehicle, an unknown Dodge Ram pickup, fled the scene and has not yet been located.

The Iowa State Patrol, with assistance from the Marshalltown Police Department, continues to investigation this incident. Anyone with information about the vehicle or driver is urged to contact law enforcement.
