SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives Lisa Demuth is announcing her candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor.
Demuth, a small business owner from Cold Spring, served as a school board member for over a decade before being elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2018. She became House Speaker in February, making history as both the first Black lawmaker and the first Republican woman to hold the position.
Larry Jacobs, a political scientist, professor and director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, said Demuth remains firmly rooted in conservative viewpoints but brings a different political approach than many of her colleagues and shows a willingness to work across the aisle.
