ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth announced her candidacy for governor on Sunday, aiming for the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Gov. Tim Walz.

Demuth seeks to make history as the first woman and person of color to become governor of Minnesota. Winning the election would also end a nearly two-decade Republican drought in statewide offices.

In a crowded GOP field, Demuth will compete against notable candidates like Dr. Scott Jensen, Kendall Qualls, and Rep. Kristin Robbins.

"I believe that we'll be able to build a better and a stronger Minnesota here together," Demuth said. She emphasized the importance of business success, family prosperity, and educational excellence.
