DETROIT — There were several hiccups along the way, but Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy injected life into a team desperate for a victory Sunday.

The second-year quarterback found the end zone three times — twice through the air and once on the ground — as the Vikings shocked the defending NFC North champions in Detroit. A loss could have completely altered the mindset ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, but now the Vikings (4-4) are lurking in a crowded division led by the Green Bay Packers (5-2-1).

"I'm happy that we got the win, but I'm not proud, to be honest with you. There's a lot of meat on the bone," said McCarthy, who finished just 14 of 25 passes for 143 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. "I feel like I could have played a lot better."
