wAfter a soaking start to the week in Melbourne, a further deluge of rain is set to dampen the Melbourne Cup tomorrow.

Monday morning commuters who didn't take the long weekend off were dodging showers as they headed to work, with more on the way in the city.

Showers are set to continue all day with temperatures a high of just 16 degrees.

Up to 40mm will fall, the BOM says.

And with just hours to go until 'the race that stops the nation' the earlier forecast of rain shows no signs of changing meaning an umbrella would be a handy accessory for those heading to Flemington.

The forecast for Cup Day Tuesday is cloudy with a "very high chance of showers" according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Winds will only be light however, meaning racegoers won't loose their hats.
