SLIDELL, La. — Investigators are working to determine what sparked a weekend fire that tore and leaving caretakers devastated.
Nearly 30 horses were rescued from the flames early Saturday morning at Lewis Stables, but several caretakers returned Sunday to mourn the loss of the animals they raised and trained.
For longtime horseman Gregory Lewis, the tragedy struck especially close to home. Three of his horses were among those killed.
“It hurts to see your horses that you can’t do anything to save,” Lewis said. “The fire was too bad for them to get out. But Lotto, you’s a trooper girl. You made it.”
Lotto, a Tennessee Walker, was the only horse in Lewis’s family to survive the fire. She is primarily cared for by his daughter.
