BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The University of Vermont was founded on this day in history.

Ira Allen donated 50 acres of land where the UVM Green is today to establish the school as a private university.

In the early years, the school’s president was the only faculty member.

UVM came into its own in 1864 after becoming a public land-grant university.

That established a mission of being accessible to all Vermonters and a commitment to supporting agriculture and rural communities.

Today, UVM boasts a total enrollment of about 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
