The Secretary of State for Transport has provided an update on the train derailment which occurred near the village of Shap in Cumbria this morning.
According to an Avanti West Coast spokesperson, the 4.28am service from Glasgow to London Euston went off the tracks between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District at around 6.10am this morning.
Speaking to LBC Radio shortly after the news broke, Heidi Alexander said that work would be "carried out swiftly to get people off the derailed train in Cumbria".
She added that there are no reported injuries and said: "I have been informed of this incident within the last half an hour or so. I know that a major incident has been stood up.
"We will work swiftly to make sure that people can get off the train safely.
