Kansas is home to at least 11 castles, buildings more commonly associated with Europe.
While such countries as France, Italy and Germany are home to tens of thousands, Wales has been dubbed the epicenter, featuring more castles per square mile than any other European country, according to National Geographic .
That European influence led to the building of Matrot Castle in Topeka. It was built in the 1880s by a French architect who was fleeing political oppression.
