PORT JERVIS –Port Jervis Fire Department’s oldest company, Neversink Engine Co. No. 1., has celebrated 175 years of firefighting service. A brief history was included in a power point presentation of past firefighters, officers of the company, emergency responses, fire apparatuses, and the company’s continuous place in PJFD’s own history.

Neversink Engine Co. No. 1’s 1850 roots date back to pre-Port Jervis, before it was a city (1907) and even before it became a village (1853). Formed by private individuals as a fire company, it was created in response to growth brought by the Erie Railroad and Delaware and Hudson Canal and an increasing need for fire responders.
