Syracuse, N.Y. — Starting today, drivers who speed or run red lights in most Syracuse school zones will begin receiving $50 tickets in the mail.
Thousands of drivers are expected to get tickets in the coming months under the city’s new camera traffic enforcement program near schools.
In September, more than 95,300 warning violations were sent out during the first month of a 60-day grace period that started Sept. 3.
Those tickets would have generated around $4.7 million in fines if the city hadn’t created the grace period. The city would have gotten 65% ($3 million) and the company operating the camera would have gotten 35% ($1.6 million).
The city created the grace period to give drivers time to adjust to the new program and avoid getting ticketed.
