BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — A Florida woman has filed a federal lawsuit against the Bryan County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) after she was wrongfully arrested.

In Dec. 2022, Florida resident Lesly Canales was driving on I-95 when BCSO deputies conducted a traffic stop and found a bag of instant coffee in her possession. The lawsuit states that at the stop, deputies allegedly found an open container of alcohol, a small amount of marijuana, an uncorked bottle of alcohol and alleged that Canales was driving with an expired license.

Deputies then used a field-testing kit to test the instant coffee, which revealed a false positive result for heroin, according to the lawsuit.

Following the incident, Canales was arrested and charged with minor driving offenses, misdemeanors and heroin trafficking.
