The first domino of the Red Sox’ offseason has fallen — and it comes as no surprise.
After months of speculation that he would do so, third baseman Alex Bregman informed the Red Sox on Monday that he’s opting out of his contract and hitting free agency, a source confirmed. Bregman will be free to sign with any team once the market officially opens Thursday.
When Bregman signed a heavily deferred, three-year contract with the Red Sox in February, he did so with the goal of h itting free agency again this winter and pursuing the long-term contract that he was unable to secure in his first go-around.
