A plaque honoring an African American Revolutionary War soldier is set to be dedicated on the Gilmore Car Museum property.

The Joseph B. Westnedge Chapter Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will host the ceremony at 3 p.m. Nov. 8, at the corner of M-43 and Hickory Road, according to a community announcement.

The plaque will honor Thomas Campbell/Camel, who was born into slavery in Virginia around 1760. He was offered his freedom if he served in the Continental Army, which he did, enduring hardships at Valley Forge and the Battle of Monmouth.

Campbell's journey to Michigan

After the war, Campbell married and had at least four children. He moved to Michigan after receiving a land grant, settling near Hickory Corners in Barry County. He died in 1849 and was buried in an unknown locatio
