Iowa City-area food assistance centers are bracing for increased demand as uncertainty swirls around the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Nearly 10,000 Johnson County residents rely on federal food assistance benefits to feed themselves and their families.
The Johnson County Food Access Network , Table to Table and United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties held an "emergency press conference" on Friday, Oct. 31, to address the uncertainty.
Table to Table Executive Director Nicki Ross said area food assistance organizations were "working tirelessly to meet the needs of neighbors facing hunger." The press conference was meant to "sound the alarm," according to a release from the Johnson County Food Access Network, and to urge a "coordinated community response."
