DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (WMC) - A former DeSoto County Sheriff’s deputy is suing DeSoto County and the State of Mississippi (Mississippi Department of Public Safety) after he alleges wrongful termination and false imprisonment.

Ronnie Hunt worked for the sheriff’s department as a deputy jailer and was fired in 2024 after facing charges for allegedly aiding the escape of inmate Joshua Zimmerman .

Court documents say Hunt denies assisting in any escape or committing any misconduct. Hunt says his criminal charges were never indicted. Hunt says the alleged false arrest and termination caused severe emotional distress, loss of income, reputational harm, and humiliation.
