A well-meaning neighbour has been branded "creepy" and "passive-aggressive" after sending the couple downstairs a note following the birth of their first child.

The neighbour said she and her husband wanted to welcome the new parents, who had just brought home their newborn baby.

However, after dropping the note through her neighbour's door, the woman worried her message had been misinterpreted.

"I thought it would be nice to leave a note," she wrote on Reddit, alongside a picture of the message.

"But since we left it we haven't heard anything back and they kind of stare at us if we cross paths. It's made me feel like this could've been received poorly."

The note read: "My husband and I noticed you recently came home with your new little one and wanted to extend (our) congratulations
