Nationals leader David Littleproud has urged Opposition Leader Sussan Ley to abandon all net zero related commitments, despite resistance from moderates within the Liberal Party.
The Nationals on Sunday unanimously voted to dump the party’s commitment to net zero by 2050.
The decision set the stage for a showdown between the Nationals and the Liberals over climate policy, with Ms Ley indicating in a leadership meeting on Monday she may concede to Mr Littleproud on net zero to avert a Coalition split.
Deputy Liberal Senate leader and moderate Anne Ruston told the meeting it would be madness to scrap the net zero target, while senior conservatives including Angus Taylor, Michaelia Cash and James Paterson advocated ditching net zero.
