The Panola County Sheriff’s Office has delivered formal notices to all convenience and retail stores in the county, advising that any hemp products intended for public consumption without FDA approval are illegal locally.
Deputies said businesses that continue to sell or store unapproved hemp products could face felony charges, citing a recent Mississippi Attorney General’s opinion on the issue.
With medical marijuana now legal in Mississippi, the sheriff’s office said the sale of “potentially harmful” hemp products in convenience stores is unnecessary and detrimental to the community.
The agency said it will monitor compliance and take enforcement action if violations are found.
