Melbourne United have blown the chance to make club history, with their nine-match winning streak to start the season ended by the Sydney Kings in a thriller.

The last NBL team to win 10 straight were the Kings in 2003-04 en route to a championship, and the Sydneysiders kept that record alive with skipper Matthew Dellavedova and Kendric Davis leading the charge.

In front of a sell-out crowd at John Cain Arena on the eve of the Melbourne Cup public holiday, United were slightly off their game from the opening whistle and the Kings took advantage for a 95-92 victory.

Jesse Edwards had the chance to put United ahead with 15 seconds left but the centre missed two free throws.
